DIY Sesame Street Family Halloween Costumes: Big Bird and Cookie Monster

Halloween is upon us, and this year, we decided to do something a little different—a family costume inspired by none other than Sesame Street! In true family fashion, I chose to be Big Bird, my husband Oscar the Grouch, and we dressed our toddler, Jam, as Cookie Monster. And let me tell you, making these costumes was a journey—one that might’ve been pricier than ordering the Cookie Monster one online.

DIY Sesame Street Family Costume: How We Made Big Bird and Cookie Monster!

As I hunted online for the perfect Cookie Monster costume, I quickly realized the price was sky-high. So, I thought, *“Why not DIY it?”* Spoiler alert: it cost more to make, but at least now we have a one-of-a-kind family costume that will turn heads!

I also decided to make my Big Bird costume to keep things fun and flirty for Halloween night (because moms can still hit up Halloween parties after trick-or-treating, right?). My husband, though? He wasn’t feeling the DIY spirit and went the Amazon route for his Oscar the Grouch costume.

**Tiffy Tip:** Both of these are no-sew costumes, so you don’t have to be a seamstress to make them. All you need is a glue gun, a little patience, and a lot of creativity! Plus, you can use this tutorial to create any Sesame Street character—just change the colors, and you’re good to go.

How to Make a DIY Big Bird Costume

Big Bird is all about the vibrant yellow feathers and oversized eyes! Here’s how I brought it to life:

1. Attach Feathers with Glue Gun: Take your glue gun and start attaching the yellow feather boas to the skirt and crop top. Layer for a full, fluffy effect. **Tiffy tip: Don’t be shy with the glue!**

2. Make Big Bird’s Eyes: Grab two styrofoam balls and draw large, wide eyes with a black Sharpie. Is the Colored construction paper or felt to make the eyelids. Attach them to a yellow headband with feathers to complete the Big Bird look.

4. Add Final Touches: Don your Sesame Street socks and your full yellow ensemble. You’re ready to hit the streets (and the afterparty)!

How to Make a DIY Cookie Monster Costume

For Jam’s Cookie Monster costume, I aimed for easy and comfy, with that instantly recognizable “fur” look. I learned how to do this DIY from the blog Hello Wonderful.

1. Add Yarn Fur: Start by wrapping blue yarn around the hoodie and pants, securing it with glue. This part is time-consuming, but it’s worth it for the furry Cookie Monster effect.

2. Attach the Eyes: Draw eyes on two styrofoam balls and attach them to the hoodie with a hot glue gun. Position them slightly tilted for Cookie Monster’s signature googly look.

3. Optional Touch: Attach a fake cookie teether to carry it along—because no Cookie Monster is complete without a cookie! Plus Jam still plays with this teether.

Why DIY?

These costumes are super customizable and unique, and they come with the added satisfaction of making them yourself. Plus, you’re not limited to Big Bird or Cookie Monster; you can adapt this tutorial to create almost any Sesame Street character. Just switch up the colors and accessories, and you’ll be good to go!

Have fun this Halloween, and if you try this out Happy DIYing! 🎃
